Any chance that proper epub 3 support will be added now the backwards compatibility issues have been fixed in epub 3.2? Support for fixed layout and such?

A switch from custom code to MuPDF (the engine used currently for PDFs) for EPUB display as well is planned eventually. AFAIK MuPDF has very limited support for EPUB 3 files. You can test the latest version with your EPUBs and if it works then great, otherwise I’d suggest you file a bug so that the MuPDF devs can hopefully fix the issues before Sumatra makes the switch in future.
